Chronology:
On September 28, 1901,
Edward Vincent Sullivan was born a twin in East
Harlem. Sullivan was the third of eight children
born to Peter and Elizabeth Sullivan. Three of
his siblings, including his twin, died before
their 2nd birthday.
After
the death of Ed’s twin brother Daniel, followed
shortly after by a sister, Elizabeth. Ed’s
mother insisted on moving the family out of the
city to the country.
They
packed up and moved to Port Chester, NY where Ed
attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and later
Port Chester High School.
In
High School, Ed had little interest in academics
but had a passion and talent for sports -
basketball, football, and especially baseball.
In his senior year,
Ed combined his writing skills with his love of
sports. He approached Tom Blain, the publisher
of the Port Chester Daily Item, and asked to
cover high school sports for the newspaper. The
publisher agreed, paying Sullivan $1 per
article. Ed began writing regularly for the
paper and Blain took him under his wing,
teaching Ed the newspaper trade.
Two days before
graduation, the Port Chester Daily Item added a
new name to its masthead: Edward V. Sullivan,
the seventeen-year-old was hired full time for
$10 a week.
One of his father’s
brothers had offered to put Ed through college,
but Ed turned him down. He already had his
dream job as a sports reporter!
In 1921, Ed moved to
New York City to report to work at the Evening
Mail.
The rest is
history!
